Barcelona’s imposing red brick arch does not commemorate any particular military triumph and was instead built as the grand entrance for the 1888 Universal Exposition at the Barcelona World Fair. It is similar in size to the traditional arches built in ancient Rome and opens up to a beautiful wide tree-lined prominade which we followed to the zoo. There are similar structures built in other cities though built for other reasons in Paris, Rome, London, Brooklyn and Bucharest.
It’s a pretty impressive piece of art.
