Just because the Senate failed to extend the Patriot Act don’t believe for a minute they’re now going to dismantle the huge Utah data center, reassign all those workers (remember, nobody every gets fired or laid off in govt), and stop the metadata collection on “We the People”? Well I hope not because they are not. And if you think the USA Freedom Act is an improvement from the standpoint of our civil liberties & Constitutional liberties, you are wrong. It The USA FREEDOM Act reinstated Section 215, at least until 2017, and with it the unmitigated eavesdropping, dragnet-collection and online monitoring. But isn’t that the way it goes? Change the name and pass if off as something better than what we hated in the first place.
These are the stated Mission, Motto & Targets of the NSA taken directly from their website today:
- Mission: Collect, process, and store U.S. citizen data for the good of the Nation
- Motto: If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear
- Targets: US Citizens: American Citizen, legal residents
Does this sound like a harmless group? Something we don’t have to worry about? I don’t think so. Look carefully at what citizen data they collect.
Don’t buy this stuff about “if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear”. The 4th Amendment incorporates the right to privacy and the right to be left alone. Neither the Patriot Act nor the USA Freedom Act inspires reverence or respect among the president or our Congress men & women. Who really stood up for “We the People” on this issue. Rand Paul, period.
Help pass liberty on to the next generation. Learn and teach the US Constitution to your kids, friends and coworkers.
