It’s not enough that Obama has been systematically emptying prisoners at an alarming rate, violent offenders as well as illegal immigrants, he’s now telling us, well landlords anyway, that you must rent to criminals! Obama is right in our face again, our personal business warning if you own a home or an apartment building and refuse to rent to someone with a criminal record that you are in violation of the Fair Housing Act and can be prosecuted and fined for racial discrimination.
Apparently you have no right to protect your hard work and investment, nor the safety and welfare of your other tenants by screening out future tenants who’ve been convicted of criminal behavior. The Department of Housing and Urban Development warned in an agency announcement,
“Because of widespread racial and ethnic disparities in the US criminal justice system, criminal history-based restrictions on access to housing are likely disproportionately to burden African-Americans and Hispanics. . . . [T]herefore such a practice would violate the Fair Housing Act.”
Obama has just found yet another way to label us racists. But sorry, according to Jeff Jocoby of the Boston Globe, more than 40 percent of offenders return to prison within three years of their release. A property owner with a blanket no-convicts rule is not being irrational, only cautious. And caution — even an abundance of caution — is not a race crime.
