Was Ron Paul a mean old man or a good steward of our Constitution??

Of course Ron Paul is no longer in Congress (though his son Rand is a Senator) and these discussions took place a few years ago, but it’s good to highlight when some in Congress used to do their job. I heard this on a recent Adam Corolla show podcast. His is the #1 podcast on iTunes, so you may want to check it out.

But I digress. Congressman Paul used to have a sign on his desk that read:

“Don’t steal, the government hates competition.”

Ron Paul voted “No” on awarding Congressional Gold Medals to anyone

Paul voted against awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to Mother Teresa all the while extolling her virtues and praising her good works. He has also voted against giving the medal to Rosa Parks, the Pope, Tony Blair, the Dalai Lama, Frank Sinatra, South African President Nelson Mandela, Arnold Palmer, Charles Schultz (creator of the Peanuts cartoon), and untold others. He always voted against awarding the Congressional Medals to anyone and he was usually the lone dissenting vote.

Was Ron Paul just an angry, stingy old man? No he just disapproved of spending government money on such awards.  I don’t know how much gold is actually in these medals, and most are probably bronze these days but that’s not the point. According to Ron Paul Forums, Paul believed that every member of Congress who voted in favor of awarding the Congressional Gold Medal ought to contribute enough money to raise the funds for the medal, since the implied powers of Congress don’t include robbing the American people to pay for feel-good political gestures. Can I get an “Amen”?

He believes in the US Constitution and this spending is not authorized by the Constitution. On C-SPAN he said,

If you’re willing to bend the rules a little bit for seemingly unimportant issues and small amounts of money, you’ll do it for the big issues such as war. So if you want to believe in the Constitution and the Republic, you have to obey and rules and laws all the time. You can’t just pick and choose…”

He swore an oath just like all the rest of them did, so how’d we get where we are today?
