Knock-knock, I’m From The Government, I’m Here To Help You

January 9, 2012

It’s the internet death penalty wrapped in a pretty package of the federal government once again protecting us. This time to stop online piracy, Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). I’m getting a little sick of all this freaking government protection.

So is Bob. Take a look.

Contact Congress right now and do what Bob says, SAY NO TO SOPA!

For a little perspective, here are the top 10 countries that censor the internet:

  • Turkmenistan
  • Vietnam
  • Tunisia (yes-the birthplace of the Arab Spring)
  • Syria
  • China
  • Iran
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Cuba
  • Burma
  • North Korea

Censorship does not happen overnight, but Google, AOL, Microsoft, Yahoo, etc., have had plenty of practice in the above regimes using various methods of discouragement at the behest of those governments. But perhaps it’s getting a little too close for comfort with our own government’s plan to seriously and permanently damage the way the internet works for all with SOPA floating through Congress as we speak, the internet biggies (Google, eBay, Facebook, Twitter, and the like) are worried and planning an industry-wide protest, saying

“legislation aimed at tackling online piracy would create an “internet blacklist bill” that would encourage censorship, kill jobs and give US authorities unrivalled powers over the world’s websites.”

I guess maybe that worm has turned turned for those companies who were all too accommodating for dictators of the world. I personally don’t want to give the Justice Department this kind of authority when they already pick and choose the parts of the constitution they want to uphold or ignore.

Aloha, Mikie
