Could McCain, Collins Or Murkowski Defect To The Dark Side & Hand The Senate Majority To The Dims?

July 31, 2017

I had forgotten it, but in 2001 Senator John McCain almost left the Republican Party, to the point of planning his press conference to make the announcement with then-Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle. He was sour at the GOP’s treatment of him during the 2000 presidential primary when he was challenging George W. Bush for the presidency.

His defection would have thrown the power to the Dims even though he would have likely declared as an Independent. He didn’t go through with it, but many Dimocratic thinkers (Harry Reid, Tom Daschle and very likely Senate Majority Leader Up-chuck Schumer), are no doubt salivating over the prospect of just such a defection now that McCain handed the Republicans the deciding vote killing the “skinny” repeal. McCain was even seen chatting happily on the Senate floor with Schumer and other Democrats (hat-tip Politico) he clearly considers friends—not with most of the Republican leaders he was about to outrage.

The 3 Republicans who killed the “Skinny” repeal; Lisa Murkowski, John McCain and Susan Collins.

McCain is an unknown especially given his recent glioblastoma diagnosis, one of the most common but also one of the most malignant brain tumors. The average life expectancy for those with this type of cancer even with treatment is 14 months. But both Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski (the other 2 nay votes on the skinny repeal) have openly criticized Trump in the past. They both frequently vote with the Dims favoring union control of the public schools and Planned Parenthood. In short, they can never be counted on to stick with the Republicans on most important issues, so are ripe for the plucking by Schumer in my estimation.

If any one of the 3 musketeers does go to the dark side, it’s a whole new ball game!
