Three (privileged, I might add) freshmen from the UCLA basketball team have found themselves left behind in Hangzhou, China while the rest of the team boarded a plane to fly back to California yesterday.
Freshmen LiAngelo Ball, Jalen Hill, and Cody Riley were forced to remain at the team hotel, the Hyatt Regency in Hangzhou and their season-opening victory over Georgia Tech is likely today the last thing on their mind despite the off-hand remark made by LaVar Ball, LiAngelo’s father that,
“It ain’t that big a deal.”
And this should tell you all you need to know as to how these kids ~they are still teenagers, got into this fix. They’re spoiled, privileged, pampered and their own parents believe and have taught them that they are special and can pretty much do what they want. Maybe we should label it the Kaepernick syndrome. Newsweek Magazine years ago explained why athletes aren’t roll models. They summed it up this way:
“Spoiled-athlete syndrome begins early in sports socialization. From the time they could be picked out of a lineup because of their exceptional athletic ability, they’ve been pampered and catered to by coaches, classmates, teammates, family members and partners. They learn they aren’t accountable for their behaviors off the field and they’re used to people looking the other way.”
I’m pretty sure none of these kids needed to steal sunglasses from the Louis Vuitton store in the high-end store that caught them on surveillance video (at 3 different stores, btw) shoplifting.
They are darn lucky to be out on bail as this is rarely something afforded to Chinese citizens in this situation. Maybe that had something to do with the fact that President Trump & the FLOTUS were in China when it took place and Trump & PRC President, Xi Jinping seem to have hit it off very nicely, but the prison sentence for this little caper could be as much as ten years. Oh, and the conviction rates for theft in China reach 99.2%. This is a big deal pops!
